Transposing Transformations

Societal transformation is a messy business. Unintended consequences, lucky coincidences and unexpected outcomes are part of the game. As are learning from one another and wishful thinking about re-applying best practices.

In this workshop, we will examine two particular cases. One is the Brabant Outcomes Fund, a public-private financing method initiated by the province of Noord-Brabant to boost socio-economic transformation by realising and concretising the purpose economy. The second is the ‘Station of Being’, a radical new design for a bus stop aimed at making sustainable public transport more appealing, realized in Umeå, Northern Sweden.

Both of these cases offer the possibility to examine what we can learn from transformative proposals that emerged in the mix between complex groups of stakeholders and established ways of doing things. We will do this by transposing one best practice into the context of the other, to understand what is unique and specific to one European location, as well as understand if and what is generalizable and replicable in another.
